Winter is my favorite season of the year. I know it may sound strange since I live in Belize, a country known for its tropical climate and warm weather, but there are many reasons why I love this season. In this article, I will share with you some of the reasons why winter is my favorite season and why you should consider visiting Belize during this time of the year.
The Weather
Winter in Belize is not as cold as in other countries, but it is still cooler than the rest of the year. The temperature drops to around 70°F (21°C) during the day and 60°F (15°C) at night. This may not seem like much, but it is a welcome change from the hot and humid weather we experience during the rest of the year. The cooler weather also makes it more comfortable to explore the outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of Belize.
The Festivities
Winter is a time of festivities in Belize. The Christmas season starts in early December and lasts until the first week of January. During this time, the streets are decorated with lights, and there are parades, concerts, and other events to celebrate the season. One of the most popular events is the annual Christmas Bram, a traditional event where people gather to sing carols and enjoy local food and drinks.
The Food
Winter is also a time for comfort food. In Belize, we have many traditional dishes that are perfect for the cooler weather. One of my favorites is the Belizean rice and beans, which is a staple dish in our cuisine. It is made with red kidney beans, coconut milk, and rice, and it is usually served with stewed chicken, pork, or fish. Other popular dishes during the winter season include tamales, panades, and salbutes.
The Activities
Winter is a great time to explore the outdoors in Belize. The cooler weather makes it more comfortable to hike, bike, and explore the natural beauty of the country. One of the most popular activities during the winter season is birdwatching. Belize is home to over 500 species of birds, and many of them can be seen during the winter months. Other popular activities include snorkeling, diving, and exploring the ancient Maya ruins.
The Wildlife
Winter is also a great time to see wildlife in Belize. Many animals are more active during the cooler months, and it is easier to spot them in the wild. Some of the animals you can see during the winter season include jaguars, howler monkeys, tapirs, and toucans. Belize is also home to the largest population of manatees in the Caribbean, and they are easier to spot during the winter months.
The Beaches
Winter is a great time to visit the beaches in Belize. The cooler weather makes it more comfortable to spend time on the beach, and there are fewer tourists during this time of the year. Some of the best beaches to visit during the winter season include Placencia, Hopkins, and Caye Caulker.
The Culture
Winter is a great time to experience the culture of Belize. Many of the traditional events and festivals take place during this time of the year, and it is a great opportunity to learn more about the history and traditions of the country. Some of the events you can attend during the winter season include the Garifuna Settlement Day, the Battle of the Drums, and the Maya Deer Dance.
The Scenery
Winter is a great time to enjoy the natural beauty of Belize. The cooler weather makes it more comfortable to explore the forests, rivers, and waterfalls of the country. Some of the most beautiful places to visit during the winter season include the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, the Rio On Pools, and the Big Rock Falls.
The People
Finally, one of the reasons why I love winter in Belize is the people. Belizeans are known for their hospitality and friendliness, and they are always happy to welcome visitors to their country. During the winter season, there are fewer tourists, which means that you can get to know the locals better and experience the culture of Belize in a more authentic way.
Conclusion
In conclusion, winter is my favorite season of the year, even though I live in a tropical country like Belize. The cooler weather, the festivities, the food, the activities, the wildlife, the beaches, the culture, the scenery, and the people make it a great time to visit Belize. If you are planning a trip to Belize, I highly recommend visiting during the winter season to experience all that this beautiful country has to offer.
